HEMATOLOGY
Hematology is the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood and its disorders. It encompassed the treating of diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, haemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, platelets, blood vessels, spleen, and the mechanism of coagulation. Such diseases might include haemophilia, blood clots (thrombus), other bleeding disorders, and blood cancers such as leukaemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma.
Haematology is a diverse subspecialty of internal medicine, besides it is distinct from, but overlapping with the subspecialty of medical oncology. It is the epicentre of preventive medicine as it leads to early detection that can avert major complication to vital organs live heart, brain liver etc. Haematology may specialize further as below :
- Treating bleeding disorders such as haemophilia and Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
- Treating haematological malignancies such as Lymphoma and Leukaemia(cancers)
- Treating Hemoglobinopathy
- Bone marrow and stem cell transplantation.
- The science of Blood transfusion and the work related to blood banks.
